Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers will open a clinic focused on behavioral health services and funded with $3.7 million from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin at the soon-to-be vacated Badger Mutual Insurance offices on Milwaukee’s near south side.

Sixteenth Street will collaborate on the project with the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division.

The clinic will focus on prevention, early intervention and same-day access, Sixteenth Street said in a news release. The facility will offer a continuum of community-based behavioral health and substance-use care.

The two organizations will be co-located on the same floor. The clinic will open by late 2020 and serve both Sixteenth Street patients and community residents experiencing non-emergency behavioral health needs.

The location is at 1635 W. National Ave., which is owned by Badger Mutual Insurance. The insurer is relocating to The 42 building at The Brewery in downtown Milwaukee.

Sixteenth Street will own the 32,000-square-foot building and Milwaukee County behavioral health will rent approximately 5,000 square feet. The sale price was not immediately available.

“Through this clinic, we want to reduce barriers to care by reaching people early and often in their own neighborhood and wrap them into our network of existing services for a true patient-centered experience,” said Dr. Julie Schuller, president and CEO of Sixteenth Street.

The Froedtert & MCW health network also recently contributed $6 million toward another new Sixteenth Street medical clinic at 1135 S. Cesar E. Chavez Drive to increase access to community-based primary care.

“Behavioral health and substance use are consistently named by our community as significant health needs in Milwaukee and beyond,” said Froedtert Health president and CEO Cathy Jacobson. “In conjunction with our previously announced partnership with Sixteenth Street to increase community-based access to primary care, this additional investment will enhance access to behavioral health services within the heart of Milwaukee.”

Sixteenth Street is a federally qualified health center that provides primary care services in neighborhoods underserved by the health care system.
