North Philadelphia is now home to a new primary care center.

The doors have officially opened to the PHMC Health Center at Temple – a 4,400-square foot facility located adjacent to Temple University Hospital’s emergency department.

The new center will help the emergency department by providing accessible, affordable health services to those who don’t need to be admitted to the hospital but need general care.

“There is no question that the role and mission by PHMC here at Temple coincides very nicely with what we do,” Dr. Larry R. Kaiser, president and CEO of Temple University Health System said during the grand opening event.

“It’s a commitment to population health, to improving access by providing alternative care locations and to improving the health and well-being of our patients and the community and Temple – both the university and the health system — has maintained this commitment to serving this underserved population for its entire history.“

The federally-qualified health center enables patients not needing high level emergency care to have the option to be seen sooner and have their needs met by the Public Health Management Corporation primary care nurse practitioners and social workers.

“PHMC knows our community and the burdens that its members face, both clinical and non-clinical,” said Dr. Verdi J. DiSesa, president and CEO of Temple University Hospital.

“They have expertise that helps them assess and target health interventions effectively. We could not have chosen a better partner for this mutually beneficial initiative to enhance the care experience of our patients.”

The facility, which is PHMC’s sixth health center, offers primary and behavioral health care, family planning, chronic disease management, HIV prevention, health education and assistance with social services.

Patients who receive care at the health center will have access to Temple’s ancillary services or can be referred to appropriate specialty care providers at Temple.

“The purpose of this center is to provide the best possible health care for the people that we serve, while driving down the cost of the health system by providing the right level of care for people at the right time and the right place,” said Richard J. Cohen, president and CEO of PHMC, a non-profit health corporation.

The center offers same day appointments and flexible payment options and patients can receive enrollment assistance with the Health Insurance Marketplace.

PHMC Health Center at Temple is located at 3401 N. Broad St. The facility is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m., and Wednesday and Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
