WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Tom O’Halleran, D-Ariz., applauded last week’s announcement by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Center for Substance Abuse Treatment to award more than $500,000 to Canyonlands Community Healthcare facilities to increase access to medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in rural Arizona for patients struggling with opioid addiction.

“I am pleased to see much-needed funding going towards treatment strategies for Arizonans affected by the opioid crisis,” O’Halleran said. “These programs, especially those available through community health centers, are absolutely essential for rural communities across Arizona’s First Congressional District.”

Canyonlands Community Healthcare is a community health center that has 10 locations in seven rural Arizona communities and provides health-care services and resources to thousands of patients in need. Last year, Arizona community health centers served more than 600,000 patients and provided critical jobs to nearly 5,000 doctors, nurse, and medical staff.

“Across this country, Americans are falling victim to an epidemic that knows no boundaries, but grants that fund programs like these take critical first steps to assist those suffering,” O’Halleran said. “Community Health Centers are the primary medical care providers for more than 26 million Americans; we must ensure they are fully funded and able to continue administering these key programs.”

The Department of Health and Human Services oversees the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) — the awarding agency for this grant. The CSAT spearheads public health initiatives to improve the mental and behavioral health of the nation.
