Construction of a new community health center in Northampton County is progressing, with the facility set to open early next year.
Nancy Stern, chief executive officer of Eastern Shore Rural Health System, Inc., updated the Northampton County Board of Supervisors about progress on the 24,500-square-foot medical center.
“We hope to see the green roof go on, hopefully, the end of the month or early August,” Stern said.
Ground was broken on the center in August 2018.

The building will be the third of its kind Eastern Shore Rural Health has built on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, after the Onley and Atlantic Community Health Centers were built in the past.
Stern announced the center will be named for Calvin Brickhouse, a former teacher, principal and Northampton County School Board member who also was a longtime member of the Eastern Shore Rural Health board of directors.
About 46% of construction is complete and interior details have been selected, including cabinetry, colors and the like, Stern said.
The health care organization has raised about 96% of the total cost of the $11.7 million facility.
“We are trying to raise about $514,000 to finish off the total expenditure,” Stern said.
